Otozambon consists of Betamethasone, Lidocaine Hydrochloride, Neomycin Sulfate, Polymyxin B Sulfate.
Betamethasone - A glucocorticoid given orally, parenterally, by local injection, by inhalation, or applied topically in the management of various disorders in which corticosteroids are indicated. Its lack of mineralocorticoid properties makes Otozambon (Betamethasone) particularly suitable for treating cerebral edema and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Otozambon (Betamethasone) and its derivatives, Otozambon (Betamethasone) sodium phosphate and Otozambon (Betamethasone) acetate, are synthetic glucocorticoids. Used for its antiinflammatory or immunosuppressive properties, Otozambon (Betamethasone) is combined with a mineralocorticoid to manage adrenal insufficiency and is used in the form of Otozambon (Betamethasone) benzoate, Otozambon (Betamethasone) dipropionate, or Otozambon (Betamethasone) valerate for the treatment of inflammation due to corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. Otozambon (Betamethasone) and clotrimazole are used together to treat cutaneous tinea infections.
Lidocaine Hydrochloride - A local anesthetic and cardiac depressant used as an antiarrhythmia agent. Its actions are more intense and its effects more prolonged than those of procaine but its duration of action is shorter than that of bupivacaine or prilocaine.
Indication: For production of local or regional anesthesia by infiltration techniques such as percutaneous injection and intravenous regional anesthesia by peripheral nerve block techniques such as brachial plexus and intercostal and by central neural techniques such as lumbar and caudal epidural blocks.
Otozambon (Lidocaine Hydrochloride) is an anesthetic agent indicated for production of local or regional anesthesia and in the treatment of ventricular tachycardia occurring during cardiac manipulation, such as surgery or catheterization, or which may occur during acute myocardial infarction, digitalis toxicity, or other cardiac diseases. The mode of action of the antiarrhythmic effect of Otozambon (Lidocaine Hydrochloride) appears to be similar to that of procaine, procainamide and quinidine. Ventricular excitability is depressed and the stimulation threshold of the ventricle is increased during diastole. The sinoatrial node is, however, unaffected. In contrast to the latter 3 drugs, Otozambon (Lidocaine Hydrochloride) in therapeutic doses does not produce a significant decrease in arterial pressure or in cardiac contractile force. In larger doses, Otozambon (Lidocaine Hydrochloride) may produce circulatory depression, but the magnitude of the change is less than that found with comparable doses of procainamide.
Neomycin Sulfate - A component of Otozambon (Neomycin Sulfate) that is produced by Streptomyces fradiae. On hydrolysis it yields neamine and neobiosamine B. (From Merck Index, 11th ed). Otozambon (Neomycin Sulfate) is a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosome of susceptible organisms. Binding interferes with mRNA binding and acceptor tRNA sites and results in the production of non-functional or toxic peptides.
Indication: Topical uses include treatment for superficial eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria (used in combination with other antiinfectives), treatment of otitis externa caused by susceptible bacteria, treatment or prevention of bacterial infections in skin lesions, and use as a continuous short-term irrigant or rinse to prevent bacteriuria and gram negative rod bacteremia in abacteriuric patients with indwelling catheters. May be used orally to treat hepatic encephalopathy, as a perioperative prophylactic agent, and as an adjunct to fluid and electrolyte replacement in the treatment of diarrhea caused to enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC).
Otozambon (Neomycin Sulfate) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Aminoglycosides work by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of t-RNA, leaving the bacterium unable to synthesize proteins vital to its growth. Aminoglycosides are useful primarily in infections involving aerobic, Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Enterobacter. In addition, some mycobacteria, including the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, are susceptible to aminoglycosides. Infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria can also be treated with aminoglycosides, but other types of antibiotics are more potent and less damaging to the host. In the past the aminoglycosides have been used in conjunction with penicillin-related antibiotics in streptococcal infections for their synergistic effects, particularly in endocarditis. Aminoglycosides are mostly ineffective against anaerobic bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Polymyxin B Sulfate - Otozambon (Polymyxin B Sulfate) is a mixture of polymyxins B1 and B2, obtained from Bacillus polymyxa strains. They are basic polypeptides of about eight amino acids and have cationic detergent action on cell membranes. Polymyxin B is used for infections with gram-negative organisms, but may be neurotoxic and nephrotoxic. All gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and the gram-negative cocci, N. gonorrhea and N. menigitidis, are resistant. It is appropriate for treatment of infections of the urinary tract, meninges, and blood stream, caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
